112 to be Single Number for all emergencies (adapted from The Hindu)

The people of India in distress will soon get help using a single number, “112” for all emergencies services in the country. This move was recommended by The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The number will be integrating help services by police, ambulance and fire brigade. Currently, people need to dial different emergency numbers to get relief for different emergencies like 100 for police, 101 for fire, 102 for ambulance and 108 for disaster management.  These number will also be working alongside 112.

Logic behind single number:

In emergency situations even seconds can prove to be fatal and the first few minutes are crucial. So to avoid confusion regarding which number to dial, TRAI proposed a single number for all type of emergencies.

Single Emergency Numbers of Other Countries:

USA 911, EU 112, Australia 000, NZ 111, UK 999
