Centre doubles solar park capacity to 40,000 MW (Relevant for GS Prelims and GS Mains Paper III)

The Cabinet has approved the doubling of solar park capacity to 40,000 MW, which will entail an additional 50 solar parks to be set up at a cost to the government of Rs.8,100 crore.

What are solar parks?
A photovoltaic power station, also known as a solar park, is a large-scale (PV system) designed for the supply of merchant power into the electricity.
They are sometimes also referred to as solar farms or solar ranches, especially when sited in agricultural areas.

Environmental benefits of the project
The total capacity when operational will generate 64 billion units of electricity per year which will lead to abatement of around 55 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year over its life cycle.
