Country without a pause (Adapted from The Hindu Editorial)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a case for holding simultaneous elections to Parliament, State legislatures and local bodies. Also, Last week, a group of ministers initiated a discussion with Election Commission officials on the proposal.

Benefit of holding simultaneous elections to Parliament, State legislatures and local bodies 1. Saving of time, money and efforts to conduct multiple elections.

2. During elections, entire administrative machinery is at halt and busy in conducting elections.

Challenges in holding simultaneous elections to Parliament, State legislatures and local bodies

1.      Early dissolution of governments because of lack of majority

2.      In addition, fixed terms would militate against the freedom that a government has to go back to the people any time to refresh its mandate.

3.      Given that partisan stand-offs are inhibiting cooperation across the areas, to dispense with the option of returning to the people for a refreshed mandate would be self-defeating.

4.      Local and regional issues dominate the national elections. This results in larger vote share of regional politicial parties at the cost of national political parties.
