Haryana Govt. approved the name change of Gurgaon
The Haryana Government approved the proposal to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and that of district Mewat as district Nuh. A gazette notification to this effect is expected in the next few days.
Power to change the name of city
While the power to change the names of cities lies with the Centre, the States could change the names of districts.
State Govt. had already got the NOC from the Union government to change the name of Gurgaon city and sent the notification for printing.
Now the Haryana Cabinet has approved to change the name of Gurgaon district and it would be notified in a couple of days.
It was in April this year that the Haryana government floated the proposal to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram based on the historic connect of the city with Guru Dhronacharya. The decision to change the name had been taken on the basis of the representations received from several fora.
