Entry of India not on Seoul NSG meet agenda: China (Relevant for Mains GS Paper II, Membership of NSG)

Statement by China
India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is not yet on the agenda of the Seoul Plenary this week, China said on Monday.

Demand by China
China and a few other NSG countries have called for a criteria-based process for entry of countries like India and Pakistan, who are not signatories to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty), into the 48-member nuclear club.

At present NSG has no criteria for non-signatories of NPT and drafting of a new criteria will delay India’s membership into NSG.

Objections by China
1.    China says that Pakistan shall also be granted membership along with India.
2.    India has not signed NPT. Thus, a suitable criteria shall be drafted by NSG for entry of non signatories of NPT.
