Govt. not to change stand on compulsory drug licences (adapted from The Economic Times)

In a major reprieve for patients and nations that depend on affordable generic drugs made in India, the government today said it retained the right to issue compulsory licences in cases of public health emergencies to enable domestic generic drug-makers to manufacture medicines patented abroad.

Background:

Compulsory license refers to the right granted to a local manufacturer to produce a patented medicine so that it is available to people at cheap rates.
