GSI to compile Himalayan landslide data -Adapted from The Tribune

Geological Survey of India (GSI) has launched a two year project to create a landslide compendium of unstable mountain slopes of  northwest Himalayas in three states of HP, J&K and Uttarakhand. 

It will be available in both digital and print versions and provide landslide maps and text information on landslide prone areas.

GSI is the nodal agency for landslide studies in India and has recently created a cell for geo-hazards research and management. 

Causes of landslides: 
Deforestation, Construction, Mining, Floods, Geological activity (Earthquakes)

Importance of the project:

It will provide critical information to minimise the impact of landslide disasters.
