India may become home to the largest telescope project in the world (adapted from The Economic Times)

Hanle village in Ladakh (near Pangong Tso lake, close to Line of Actual Control)  has been short-listed as a prospective site by the $1.47 billion Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) International Observatory board. 

The project faced legal hurdles in Mauna Kea, Hawaii , which was the first choice for the project. 

The Hawaii Supreme Court had in December 2015 cancelled the permit issued to TMT for constructing the observatory in Manua Kea.

India is expected to invest $212 million in the project

Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bengaluru is the nodal agency.

Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune

The department of science and technology (DST)

Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) 

Objective:

i)To study sun's atmosphere
 
ii) Understand the process of creation and decay of sunspots by studying  the subsurface structure of sunspots.
