NIT campus still tense (analysed from The Hindu)

The confrontation between Kashmiri and outstation students at National Institute of Technology, Srinagar refuses to calm down. The centre govt. sent a team of Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to the campus to review the situation.

The demands of outstation students are:

1. They want proper security and safety arrangements.

2. They want back Tricolour flag which was taken from them by the authorities to be returned and hoisted near the entrance gate.

3. They want action to be taken against those NIT officials who they allege indulged in ‘anti-national’ activities.

Background:

The flare up between two Kashmiri and outstation students started when some Kashmiri students celebrated Indian cricket team’s loss to West Indies in the semi-final of the ICC T-20 World Cup on 31 March.

This incident led to protest by outstation students who were later lathi charged by the police. Eventually, CRPF had to be brought in to tackle the situation.
