Union Cabinet on Friday cleared an ordinance bypassing the Supreme Court’s decision on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), a common test for admission to medical and dental courses.
The ordinance that, once it comes into effect, will override the apex court’s May 9 order and allow the State boards to hold their own entrance tests this year.
However, from next year, students will have a common entrance test nationwide.States will be allowed to conduct their own entrance exams for this academic year. However, Central medical and dental admissions will be based on NEET even for this year.
Background :Supreme Court order
NEET should be sole criteria for medical and dental admissions.
Reasons for judgement:
1. National level test will enable selection best talent from across India to medical and dental colleges.
2. The corruption and donations involved in medical admissions would reduce once NEET is introduced.
3. If NEET is implemented then the discretion of state govts and private management in medical and dental admissions would end.
