School ban on Islamic dress sparks row (Relevant for GS Mains Paper I, Topic: Religious freedom)

Delhi Public School (DPS), Srinagar, disallowed wearing Abaya , an Islamic dress covering women from the neck to the toe, on the school campus.

Several teachers said the school has discouraged wearing the Abaya, which goes with a head scarf, for a long time now.
The issue became public when students held a daylong protest in the school premises against the alleged sacking of a woman teacher for wearing an Abaya .

Criticism of the action
People have all the freedom to take decisions about their private lives. Our State is not France where the Government or some institute decides what dress people should wear.

Wearing a veil is important for some Muslim women and the ban is a clear attempt at snatching religious rights and trespassing into one’s faith.
