Supreme Court allows diesel tourist taxis to run as Delhi cabs (Analysed from the Hindu, Relevant for GS II, Role of Judiciary, Judgement to protect environment and GS III, Environment Conservation)

Supreme Court allows 64,000-odd all-India tourist permit (AITP) diesel taxis to run as Delhi cabs in the National Capital Region. The Supreme Court lifted its 10-day ban on these cabs thus providing a huge relief to call centres which use the vehicles to ferry their 2.5 lakh employees across three states.

Earlier, the SC had banned all diesel cabs in Delhi for their failure to convert to CNG in the larger effort to curb air pollution.

The SC also permitted diesel taxis to do point-to-point pick-up and drop of passengers within the NCR like city cabs running on petrol and CNG.

The relief will last only till their AITP permits are valid.

The court did not relax the ban on registration of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity of 2000 cc or more.
